Crinan Canal

Post by Aja »

I see the canal is closed. I'm assuming too much water from yesterday's rainfall. We came round the Mull yesterday. Man in Campbeltown looks happy!

I did too, I left Ardminish bay about 07:00 and only saw 2 other boats, and one going the other way.

I got to Tarbert 20:30, it was a long day.

Why does excess rain close it?

I once came though when they were spilling excess water, but rather than listen to how it was possible to transit without stopping the spilling, they just declared it shut for a few hours.

We didn't leave Craighouse until 07:00 with the intention of being at the lighthouse at about LW Greenock which was 11:40 we didn't actually get there till 12:45 which still gave us neutral tide till south end of Gigha then increasing help from there till we got neutral tide again at Davaar. You might have been a bit too early?

I left Gigha @ 07:00 and had foul tide until I was 5 miles off the lighthouse, the tide had been fair to go round for an hour by then.

Vis was crap, I could only see Kintyre or Arran, seldom both.

I had a fair tide all the way to Skipness and more wind than enough but the SOG was always above 5 kts and often above 7, the last 2 hours were a let down though, back to 4 kts SOG.
