Request For Sponsorship - Ocean Youth Trust Scotland

Charity oytscotland.org.uk

Fellow Sailors,

My son has been selected for Young Leaders training with the OYT and as such will raise sponsorship money to contribute to the charity. One fundraising event he is participating in is the Edinburgh Half Marathon in May (some of you will have read my post in another area of the forum (viewtopic.php?f=40&t=9391, I too am running the half marathon).

As a young leader he will participate in various training exercises with the OYT which will develop his leadership skills and abilities to manage situations and people. Ruadhan has already gained sailing skills via the RYA dingy scheme and in offshore sailing achieving Competent Crew and Day Skipper.

If you wish to donate directly to the charity then it can be done through Virgin's Money Giving website. All donations go directly to the charity.

For those who don't know about the OYT Scotland a full explanation can be read here: http://oytscotland.org.uk/about/what-we-do/

Briefly, the charity's award winning programme helps young people, from any walk of life, develop resilience, confidence and self belief through adventure training. The purpose is for the young person to believe that they can overcome challenges and through effort deliver on commitments, all worthy attributes. OYT Scotland also lists specific benefits as noted below.
Building self confidence
Respect for themselves and others
Experiencing the need for teamwork and mutual respect
Developing problem solving and leadership skills
Taking responsibility for their own actions and decisions
Developing social and life skills
Experience of healthy living
Understanding the needs and backgrounds of others
A sense of community and active citizenship
Developing a sense of equality and fairness
Promoting an awareness and respect for the environment
Promoting the importance of lifelong learning
Improved literacy and numeracy
A range of nationally recognised qualifications
Learning a range of sailing and navigation skills
On a personal level I benefited greatly from sail training having worked with Strathclyde Regional Council's Community Education programme in the 1980s on board their sail training yacht. I can vouch that sail training works for instilling confidence, responsibility and commitment.

If you can donate a small amount that would be really appreciated and if not that's cool as well.

Thanks for reading.

Okay, this is a double post, the same as the one in the members only area, but heck what's etiquette for if you can't break the rules sometime. The 1/2 marathon update: -

Done it!

Me 2:33 (following a training plan) and the boy 2:10 (zero training), not bad for an asthmatic and a gamer. I am pleased to say that I ran the whole way and not stopped once. I was greatly aided by energy gels (sucked from a sachet) and electrolytes (added to my water); remarkable products that take the misery out of it all but taste foul just to make sure that there is no enjoyment at all and require will power or imminent collapse to make one consume.

Would I do it again? Don't know, it was good to finish, a real buzz, but I think I would rather bag Munros for fitness than pound the tarmac, if the truth be told.

Thanks for the sponsors, it is really appreciated, I think when we last checked he had reach just over £700, £200 above his goal to raise money for the Ocean Youth Trust. You can still donate but I am not sure for how long. Click on the link below: -

Ah ... sons.

Does that mean you might entice him into a trip to Norway or Faroe or similar? I have vague hopes in that direction, but son no 1 is too interested in racing... :-(

Thats the plan but he is off to University in September so he might get hooked on dinghy racing, we shall see.
