RYA to scrap tidal/non-tidal distinction

From 1 January 2017 there will no longer be separate tidal and non-tidal syllabi and certificates for Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper practical courses. In addition, sail and motor cruising training centres will no longer be identified as either tidal or non-tidal centres.

The new combined syllabi will 'ensure that all candidates will at the very least have covered the concepts of boat handling, navigating and pilotage in areas with streams, currents and significant tidal range. Wherever possible the syllabus should be delivered practically. If this is not possible, it must be covered theoretically'

I imagine on a practical level this will result in a boost for med-based centres, while removing the advantage from (eg) Gib-based schools.

I think that because I got an email from the RYA today - it was sent to all centres and instructors.

Shouldn't make any difference to the Clyde centres - they were all tidal anyway.

Well, I understand that for dinghies - I always thought the 2 tier scheme was a good one with tidal endorsements. An awful lot of sailors wouldn't venture onto tidal waters and it is very difficult and rather pointless to get across the concept of tidal sailing sat in a wayfarer on Windermere or Carsington, Rutland or Grafham.
Perhaps the RYA's missive is timely for dinghies but I really don't know of any inland centres teaching practical courses for cruisers so it seems pointless to say the least - or have I missed the point?

When I was running the Outdoor Centre, I held Rya Racing Coach, Coach Examiner (Dinghies) and have a Yachtmaster Offshore Cert, so I was reasonably au fait with the structures - it has probably changed a bit since I have been out which is what is provoking my interest.

Quite. After 6 years pottering about in the Med we planned to bring the boat home, possibly via the canals. I spent quite a while trying to get back into tidal mode mentally as the channel would be a baptism of fire.
Fortunately the boat sold.

I can see how non-tidal centres would be able to do this for the theory courses, but am unconvinced about them being able to make an assessment on practical courses.

Sounds like a bad move to me, and could have a detrimental impact on UK and other tidal centres.
