Port Ellen

Post by Tex »

What's the position on the upgrading of facilities at Port Ellen and Gigha?
Are the planned improvements at both now completed and open?

I'm interested to know too. Hope to be heading that way in August (Clyde to Orkney and return)

I don't know about Port Ellen but Gigha has all the moorings in place but the pontoon, or is it a pier, is not complete yet. http://www.whamassoc.org.uk/html/news.html

Don't know what the improvements are to be at Port Ellen. I was there last year and the pontons were fine and very reasonable.

As the OP I can now answer the first part of this myself.
Port Ellen now has smart new pontoons accommodating up to 20 visitors.
The old pontoons have been moved east and have space for another 12.

I can now answer the second part.
The new Gigha moorings are in place (23). The new landing stage and pontoons are still work in progress and I was advised that completion is likely to be September.
The new mooring layout still leaves sufficient room for anchoring in the southern part of the bay.
Shore side facilities remain as before. It would be great if these could be improved as they are very basic and outclassed by those now available on Jura.
