OIL FILTER FAILURE

Post by sahona »

Had an oil and filter change yesterday (in Kerrera, but that's not important).
Started the engine, checked for leaks and pressure etc, then finally set the dipstick level.
A little later, after having worked on a wiring issue, I restarted the engine and gave it a few revs - the oil pressure dropped slowly away to zero....
The only thing changed had been the filter, a Cooper bought (in bulk unfortunately) on the internet, so it was changed for a TJ I had aboard and all seemed well. I noted when I removed the cooper, it was light - ie empty, and there was not the usual mess of oil everywhere.
First time I've had that experience in a lifetime of DIY servicing.
Needless to say the next few hours of motoring are going to make me a nervous wreck.
Loch Aline here we come.

Made a major miscalculation re 'the following breeze.' Listened to and believed the weather liar, and spent an 'orrible night in Arinagour, Coll a couple of nights ago when the wind followed us in instead of going West. Big mistake, all my brownie points have been deleted and we are now pontooning again in Aline.
The engine, thankfully, has been fine, so the filter it was. - hopefully a one-off as there are more in the shed...
Haven't seen any other bluemoment burgees, and we've been out for about 5 weeks, am I due a shower or something?

I recall reading about a similar filter problem somewhere, possibly TOP or in PBO, I'll have a look. The problem was that the filter did not have any wee holes to let the oil get through to the element.

By the way, Irene says you did not smell too bad when we met you in Tobermory.
