Largs and then imediatley trucked to an industrial yard next to my home (Lanarkshire). I need to spend time from stem to stern cleaning, repairing, removing and renovating. No big changes, just need to give the old lady a good seeing too, she deserves it.

Not wishing to look a gift horse in the mouth but so far there have been several statements and no opinions. Why have you chosen Barcaldine, Ardfern or Craobh over the competition?

My options are anywhere within 25 miles or so of Dallens Bay excluding Dunstaffnage lbb. Ideally I would like the cheapest, most easily accessible yard (for all those jobs I'm probably not going to do over the winter) and the highest score in the friendliness and feelgood stakes.

We're at Creran Marine, also at Barcaldine.
Near total shelter (masts up is the norm) as it's sunk down in an old gravel pit and surrounded by trees ,good cradles if you don't have your own, very very friendly and laid back, cheapish I think, indoor storage available, small chandlery on-site, engineer on-site, nice loos + showers etc.

We called in there nearly 10 years ago as we happenned to be passing and haven't managed to leave yet.

Fills up quick though - may already be too late.

Ardfern 'cos of the quality of service, both for spares and repairs. ( there's a reason they are always full)

And the fact it's a short stroll from the hoose.

This winter at Ynyslas - pronounced Inislas just inside the delightful Dovey river in Cardigan Bay.

Moved on this summer after two wonderful full summers on the West coast using the moorings and overwintering at MRC's Barcaldine Marine.

Overwintered 10 - 11 & 12 and can't recommend them highly enough.

Why - well it's true the site is a bit agricultural but there's a couple of choices for sheltered options or by the shore for outside storage, you can also go undercover if you wish. All the services are available, electricity and water to the boat, toilets, showers, launderette, ice maker, dinghy and outboard storage and a very experienced engineer (Edwin) at Alutec who was happy to provide just advice.

The yard team under Andy were always very helpful they've got a very well equipped machine shop of their own and let me use it without charge when I had a problem with my alternator - there's also a small workshop by the shore with electricity, workbench and vice which customers use. Martin the MRC manager is also very approachable.

I'm on an elongated retirement odyssey around Britain and one of the reasons I stayed an extra year was because I found a yard where when I wasn't around the guy's in the yard would keep a weather eye on my boat and the principal of charging through the nose for every damn thing isn't prevalent in the way they run their business.

If you pay up front for a year you also get a healthy discount, charges are all upfront on their website.

I'm happy to recommend them - and I will be back !
