Wrong, wrong, wrong.
Although the longest day is June 21st, the latest sunset in the northern hemisphere is about a week later.
Look up analemma.

Re: The Nights
Fascinating
BUT
when I posted it was almost dark
The evening before was still quite light at the same time.
Anyway - it has nothing to with anything apart from my childish need to get a nights are drawing in/ nights are getting lighter post in before the other children.

I tried a google search on "analemma". My wife is now seeing lawyers. Thanks a heap.Alan_D wrote:Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Look up analemma.
On the upside, Emma looks very friendly and remarkably accommodating.

Re: The Nights
It saddens me when a man, who most certainly should know better, misuses the language so badly. How can anyone accept his opinions on any matter, even the setting of the sun, after such a display?claymore wrote:I feel that was inferred in my post therefore technically, I believe you came 2nd.

NO 4. to hint, to imply to suggest.
I think he got it right.

Re: The Nights
I regret that quoting a dubious internet source from an ex-colony that has managed to boldly* mangle the English language, grammar and spelling does not prove anything. Claymore is of an age and education where he should know the difference and I expect is abjectly ashamed of his error.Booby Trapper wrote:http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/infermarisca wrote:It saddens me when a man, who most certainly should know better, misuses the language so badly. Apart from that I were furst to mention the drawing in of the nights and in this olympic year- sod the taking part, its the winning that matters

Re: The Nights
I stand corrected. It would seem it's a common mistake and myself and Claymore have made it.marisca wrote:[I regret that quoting a dubious internet source from an ex-colony that has managed to boldly* mangle the English language, grammar and spelling does not prove anything. From the Oxford English
"There is a distinction in meaning between infer and imply. In the sentence the speaker implied that the General had been a traitor, implied means that the speaker subtly suggested that this man was a traitor (though nothing so explicit was actually stated). However, in we inferred from his words that the General had been a traitor, inferred means that something in the speaker’s words enabled the listeners to deduce that the man was a traitor. The two words infer and imply can describe the same event, but from different angles. Use of infer to mean imply, as in are you inferring that I’m a liar? (instead of are you implying that I’m a liar?), is an extremely common error."
