Upholstery replacement

Hi

I'm not getting a good night's sleep on our newly acquired Rival 36 because the forepeak cushions seem to have become compressed. The covers are somewhat dated and worn. I fancy a change. Can anyone recommend a local company? We had an excellent sprayhood made by Owen sails for our previous boat, a Contessa 32 but I wonder what their upholstery is like. The photos on the website show some rather lurid colour schemes!

Any suggestions for companies appreciated

An alternative might be a memory foam topper cut to shape. We use a 1" memory foam topper in our forepeak and it is very comfortable.

We've had some upholstery from Owen Sails. It was in a tasteful shade of blue to match existing stuff. Very comfy. It's been in place for 3 or 4 years and seems to be wearing well. Not cheap but servicable.

Another vote for Owen Sails. They made a great job of replacing all the upholstery in our last boat.

If you want to do the job on the cheap then there are two shops in Glasgow that you can take your old foam to and they'll cut you out replacements. One is in Argyle Street towards where the bus station used to be and the other is on the street that links the Argyle St shopping centre to Jamaca Street- the one Sound Control used to be on. apologies for the shyte directions...

Hi thanks for the answers so far.
"Local" is west coast, the boat is in Troon during the winter but further north during the season. I'd be happy to drive to the east part of the central belt if necessary.
Despite being based in Troon for years I'm not familiar with Troon Upholstery but then I've never had to replace the cushions before.
A memory foam topper might be a good interim measure.....

In a way it is better than interim because it smoothes out the inevitable gaps bertween the cushions . . . .

I used Coverall Upholstery in Prestwick for a new Nav station seat this year. Good job and reasonable price.


Owen Sails did the complete re-upholstery on my present boat for the previous owner. It was an excellent job but it should have been at £2500. Why they didn't do the nav station seat I don't know.

I have ordered a memory foam topper for now and will get Owen sails to give us a quote. The boat is near to them at present. Then save up with the hope of replacing the upholstery next winter.

There is a woman in Bishopbriggs who made my drunkbunk cushion and made a good job of it, reasonably priced.

An update to my earlier posts.

We have now fitted 1 inch memory foam toppers to our forepeak bunk and our son's quarter berth. They are much more comfortable. We plan to use Owen Sails for new upholstery in due course but have decided to wait a little longer, our daughter is not yet 3 years old and the chances of the new fabric getting damaged or stained is high at present and I just don't need that stress!

Gavin at the Foam Centre on Howard Street Glasgow has been an excellent help. He has ordered and cut the memory foam for us and also has cut and fitted the foam for our cockpit cushions. We would highly recommend him.
