The spirit of this forum never ceases to amaze me.
Last week I saw a post about a free echosounder - mine is broken so I responded. It arrived on Thursday - exactly as described, and included a brand new transducer.
Shuggy, the supplier, hadn't sent his address for me to send a cheque to at least cover the postage, so I sent him a pm thanking him and asking for his address. His reply was basically it doesn't matter, just make a donation to the RNLI when convenient.
I have never met Shuggy, but now consider him to be an example of all that is good with the world.
As an example of how forums should work I thought that this was brilliant.

Don't think that the cut & thrust of posts (even in TOP) represents the norm. People on TOP & other fora have done similar things for me in the past, & I have done them for others too.

It's a bit like a big club out there; good & bad, friendly & grumpy, etc etc. But Well done Shuggy & well done for a public thanks.

Go easy, too far the other way & you'll fall off the edge.

Anyway, it's no problem even without an E/S, just tack IMMEDIATELY you touch.

Tacking when you can see the seagulls knees works well for me.

That can be a mile away in some places where I sail. The tide goes out - of sight completely if you are on the beach. Beaches suitable for landing aeroplanes & racing motorbikes or horses. Beaches that stretch for miles in all directions & disappear completely 6 hours later.
