NB: Golden eagles
Don't see them very often, but wondering if there a glut of them at the moment. Or am I confusing them with something else?
I think I saw two at the weekend in unexpected locations. Number One was on Saturday while we were driving north out of Crianlarich - it was sitting in a tree, which I really wouldn't have expected. Second was on Sunday, sitting atop a forestry fence post south of Rannoch Moor, again, close to the road.
Big hooked beaks, thickly feathered legs, bright yellow feet (or talons or whatever). Is there anything else that looks like that?

Re: NB: Golden eagles
An eagle expert once explained to me that if you see a bird you think may be a golden eagle, it isn't. When you really see a golden eagle you know it is one.

white tailed sea eagle? (as seen on Autumn Watch)
Re: NB: Golden eagles
Nice try, but to the trained eye it's clearly a starling that's been photoshopped.ParaHandy wrote:well ... not golden but is an Eagle. Thur's nae doobt when you see one of them. The mackerel was mine, by the way.

Re: NB: Golden eagles
Thanks folks. Having looked at other pics as well, I'm certain they were golden eagles. Just surprised to see two by chance on successive days, and so close to the road.

Re: NB: Golden eagles
I read somewhere that something like 90% of all possible nesting eagle territories in Scotland are now occupied with either golden or sea eagles. On that basis, describing them as an endangered species makes little sense.

Buzzards perchance?
It is easiest to tell the difference between buzzrds and golden eagles when they are in flight. Eagles have long flight feathers at the tips of their wings.

Re: NB: Golden eagles
That's not a buzzard, the head and beak are different both colour and shape.
Dave S: even if 90% of possible nesting sites are occupied, you can't say whether or not they are endangered uness you know how many nesting sites there are. Bit like when I was in Nigeria and the day after a census the newspaper declared that 97% of all Nigerians had been counted .....
