I frequently get asked about how the upper atmosphere interacts with the surface, and how you can read upper air charts. Well, today has provided a good example of upper air meteorology at work as an air trough passed eastwards through the country.

Hi Simon

Thanks for this. I really enjoy the weather musings you put up. I find them clear and helpful. One slightly daft question about notation. I have noticed "troughs" before on synoptic charts drawn as dashed lines are these dashed lines always an upper air trough?
