Who has sailed to Tiree and what can they tell us about the anchorage and the fishing harbour?

We once anchored in Gott Bay, NW corner I think. It was an extraordinarily long row to the shore. The weather was very settled but I didn't fancy staying the night.
I haven't tried anywhere else on Tiree.
I've been to Coll (Arinagour) several times. I always seem to wake up to a brisk southerly with associated vigorous motion. Consequently, the west side of Mull is much favoured.

Haven't sailed there but went courtesy of Calmac. Been a couple of times for windsurfing events many years ago. What I remember most is the large Atlantic swell that you can get anywhere on the island even in Gott Bay which you would think is on the sheltered side. From my physics days I think it's due to refraction of the waves. I believe there are better anchorages on Coll but have been advised not to go there unless you like the sound of duelling banjos.

I've enjoyed our two visits to Coll, but it's not such good value now some 'enterprising' local charges £15 a night for the old HIDB moorings without providing any facilities. It's a very attractive island though, rewarding to walk around.

I got interested in visiting Tiree after creating this website for a client. Lots of info about Tiree - which I did most of the research/copywriting for.

Lots of fascinating info about Colonsay, Nick, but couldn't see much about Coll :D

You are of course correct and I appear to have become geographically challenged. I have now edited the above post though, so none of this will make a lot of sense . . .

I have a burning desire to sail there having spent two happy years there in total around 15 years ago, living by Gott Bay

In anything southerly then Gott Bay can get quite bumpy as I recall but if it is in the west then very flat. It is very shallow (i.e. up to 6 feet) a long way out which was great when windsurfing but less good on a boat.

The harbour in Scarinish has the pub but I am pretty certain it completely dries and the entrance would be tricky again in anything from the south

An absolutely stunning island though - this web site has some appalling music when you open it but some of the photos are worth a look

I've anchored there three times, with varying degrees of comfort depending on wind direction. Yotblog write ups are at:
