8 Metre Worlds

Post by marisca »

RN&CYC and Mudhook are hosts to the 8mR World Championship from today (practice race) through to Saturday 24th Aug. The weather forecast is unmitigated scottish excrement which given the record over this summer may mean blue skies and gentle breezes but I doubt it. Racing appears to be windward/leeward courses based on the East Patch. Marisca may attempt to potter over and get in the way one day but we'll see what the weather brings.
Several of the older boats were out yesterday looking really beautiful but oh so much smaller than when I was young!

Mud hook, I took part when I was so much smaller both in height and girth. Polaris was also in the day when teachers with yachts could crew up with children free from fear.

How times change.
What's that? Dunno! Should we be worried about that? Dunno! How? Ah dunno!

they have 20kts as an upper limit, to avoid damaging the boats
hoping to spectate one day during the week as a friend is driving a RIB that is supporting one of the competing boats

apparently they have an official photographer who has a drone. They tried it out last Wednesday during the East Patch racing......and a few big Scottish seagulls took exception to it and attacked it, knocking it into the water!!

Mudhook YC schools week: excellent event, shame they no longer run it. Apparently, once all the volunteers had to go through mandatory "safeguarding" training, they couldn't get enough people to run the event. The unintended consequences of well intentioned legislation.....

I'd much rather watch the 8s than the idiocy of the America's Cup "boats". 2 minutes of chasing each other before the start and that appears to be it. First boat over the line wins, especially if Ben Ainslie has splashed down.
