anti-swing sail
After many a night swinging around at anchor recently, I notice a few yachts with a v-shaped "sail" from what looks like the topping lift down to the two aft cleats to alleviate this. Anyone with any experience? (thanks, but no thanks in advance to buy a long-keeler, use more chain, buy a ketch and hoist the mizzen etc).
Re: anti-swing sail
There was a poster on YBW called Piota, that was also the boat name, who developed a riding sail on the back stay and had great success with it. It was not like the sailrite riding sail below. Unfortunately Piota has passed away.
I'll try and describe it. It was a triangle with the base horizontal to the deck. The mid line from the apex to the mid point of the base line, ran up the back stay so that the sail was aft of the back stay. The two corners of the base had a pole between them, he used a boat hook, which each end fastened to the quarter cleats. When the sail filled it looked like a hang glider. Others who have built the sail also reported exceptional stability.
