I am planning (fingers crossed) an extended (6-8 weeks) cruise of the Western Isles. Reading the CCC directions, I get the impression that there are few opportunities to get diesel unless you get the Council key which costs £20 and I think is limited to over 100 litres per fill.
The boat's tank holds 150 litres and there are 2 by 10 litre cans. Sailing boat so we don't use all that much (about 2 litres/hour under engine) but it might be windless and we need electricity for all sorts of things. I am generally quite fuel-sensitive, mainly because I don't trust the fuel gauge. It's very non-linear but so is the tank.
How easy have people found access to diesel? I am prepared to cycle a few miles to fill the cans at a garage.

Re: Diesel in the Western Isles
Lochmaddy had red at the cabin by the pontoons, but it was very sporadically staffed - an hour in the morning and an hour at night. The petrol station for white diesel is walkable and you could borrow the trolley from the marina. Since Lochmaddy is about halfway up (or down) the island chain, and has a decent shop for provisions its no hardship to call in.

This is going to be a summer of reaches, fetches and runs - you won't need to worry about diesel
