Spam fae Silkie

Post by jim.r »

Silkie did you send me this or hae ye picked up a virus or sumfink?

hello
I recommend a company< www.lianyi11.com> to you sincerely, the company's main business famous brand electronic products, and all are original, convinced me the most is their integrity. A few days ago I bought a electric guitar from company. But the goods I was not quite satisfied with that, they did immediately to another one-for-me, and in the course of they burden freight company. I am very satisfied, and now i become the company's long-term customers, I can also enjoy VIP price!
I believe it is good for you too!

Unwitting spam.

Me too. Quite a few names on the list that I recognise, I even got copied in to a grumpy reply from Claymore.

Hi

Me too. Not sure why Claymore sent his email to everyone on Silkie's address book, rather than just sending the heavies round to Silkie.

I also got the follow up spam, Nat West, I think, asking that I log on to confirm my details - that one went in the bin.

There's no sign yet that my address book has been stolen.

Someone will need to reply on Silkie's behalf, otherwise he will waste his long awaited Kilo Post.

Maybe MacHurley22 will speak up for him!!

Apologies to all

Post by Silkie »

Just got back tonight to find that I spammed everyone in this address book at 22.50 on Thursday 11/10/07. I've scanned this abacus with various security tools and this and the fact that no other address books on this computer have sent any spam mail leads me to suspect a difference engine in the internet cafe in Oban.

Be that as it may, sorry people.

PS - Thanks for replying to everyone in my address book Claymore. :sunny

So was it all pure spam - do we need to worry about our own address books?

The bit about returning the electric guitar sounded as though it could have been you - although the grammer was a bit iffy - I just thought it was ra drink!!

It's a good job that TCM wasn't in your book - have you seen this?

The link won't work because you have to be signed in to access The Lounge.

Cut and paste this link.

Looking into it . . .

Post by Nick »

I don't understand how this happened, but am looking into it. Have posted a query on the phpBB forums (below) and will get back to you if I receive any sensible replies. The software is the latest version and there have been no bug reports of this nature, so at the moment I am at a bit of a loss . . .

Silkie, check your Hotmail to see if any further spam has been sent out - might be worth changing your Hotmail password just in case.
Recently the members of one of my forums received a spam email purporting to come from the other admin's Hotmail account, which is the email address he originally signed up with.

Does anyone know how this could have been done? This admin's email address is not publicly available, so can only be seen when logged in as Admin.

The mail seems to have been sent not long after the admin accessed the board via an internet cafe - don't know if this could be relevant or not. His own PC at home was switched off for a week before this happened, so that is unlikely to be the source.
Watch this space . . .

Great kilopost by the way :tiphat:

Pretty sure that this is nothing to do with the forum but that I somehow managed to leave my hotmail password in the internet caff. I remember being surprised that hotmail defaulted to "remember me on this computer" and very definitely told it to do no such thing. On closing the browser session (Firefox) I was asked as usual if I wanted to delete all personal information on this computer, which I did.

Anyway, at least it wasn't anything nasty. Needless to say I have changed my hotmail password so hopefully there will be no recurrence.
