Plan B lives again

Some of you may know I have harboured a plan ever since returning from foreign climes in 2007 to purchase a second Vega and base it in the Canaries as a Winter refuge.

Catherine and I have just returned from a week in La Gomera, staying on a 40ft yacht in the marina in San Sebastian which the owners let out as an apartment through AirBnB. The island was as beautiful as I remembered it and we had a fantastic week.

So - the plan to purchase Fairwinds2 and get her to San Sebastian is taking shape in our minds. Ideally I would buy a Vega in the Canaries or in Spain or Portugal, but they seem o be in short supply so it may be another long sail. The plan is in embryonic form at the moment, but just thought I would share it with you.

In Gran Canaria at the moment. Will have a wander round the marina and see if there is anything suitable here.

Well. Gran Canaria and especially Las Palmas has been in party mode for the last week or so and continues for some time to come. Locally called Carneval the main square here has been converted into a mini television studio and theatre. Last night was the finals of the Drag Queen Gala which was really an eye opener. The whole of the city attends - dressed in this years theme which was Spring whinch meant that they all wore 1970's disco. There are innumerable shops selling costumes. Last night we went along to have a watch and and a beer. Weird. Whole families dressed up watching men stripping off to their scanties and a pair of huge platform boots. All in gold lame. Strangest thing I've seen. Then after a while we went back to the apartment and watched it live on national tv (which meant Spanish).
Anyhoo. Today being Shrove Tuesday everyone was on holiday and the brokers at the marina weren't about. So not able to ask if there was anything suitable island wide.

Did do a scan online.. better bet would be a Dufour 2800. Tons of them about mainland Spain and Portugal etc.

Would never have considered a Dufour 2800, but they look interesting. Vegas are still cheaper though. Would you say/do you know if there is as much space in the 2800 forecabin as there is in the Vega? It is impossible to tell from photos.

Did you see any interesting looking cheap sub-30 footers during your wander round the marina?

Have only seen that there seems to be a few Dufours for sale - quite a popular make in Gran Canaria at any rate. There doesn't appear to be that many sub 30' boats at all unless they are day sailors or mobs. Most boats have arrived here under their own steam.
A number of boats appeared pretty shagged. Bleached out sails not properly stowed etc. It would be worth an email to the local brokerage in Las Palmas; Porto Rico and Porto Mogan on spec?

No, they're not, but I could sort out something.

Berthing is paid for till the end of March, then we will likely move her to Tarbert.

Not ideal for selling, but cheaper berthing.

I could be, but at that price the first question is 'whit's wrang wi it'?

Second question, which may seem trivial - can an infill be used to provide a useable double in the forepeak? If living aboard for longer periods with a companion a permanent bed is a must.

And thirdly - are you planning a quick disposal, 'cos I don't have the readies immediately but am very interested.
