Yes, it's down . . . Pipex are getting pretty cr*p

Post by Nick »

Good to see you posting on here . . . welcome to the forums.

As you can imagine having just completed round one of the launch publicity for SailRoom I'm pretty disgruntled that the server is down for a total rebuild. It should be up later tonight or early tomorrow morning, but the last time this happened to one of Pipex's servers it was quite a lot longer . . .

We use Pipex for all our hosting, and they are usually very reliable with excellent technical backup - but it's like every internet business, cutthroat with new hosting companies springing up like mushrooms offering unbelievably good hosting deals. You know half of them will be out of business within two years or will be utterly unreliable with no tech support whatsoever, but in the meantime bigger companies like Pipex, in for the long haul, have to compete . . .

Anyway, will post on this thread again when the site is back up . . . someone already bought the first set of cleats for £1.99, I was hoping for a better price for the second set when they are listed.

Webfusion Mango Server

Monday, November 07 2005 @ 11:12 PM

After a reboot we have encountered a hardware problem on one of the disks inside Mango. While this is not one of the main disks and as such will not result in the server or websites, email, FTP, etc being offline - it may cause some intermittent problems tonight and tomorrow morning whilst our engineers work on it. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Update 8th November 11.30

The Mango server is currently off line while to perform some work to resolve further the problems encountered last night.

Update 11.53

Unfortunately the work the engineers were performing has not succeeded and the server will now require a full rebuild.

Estimates for the work suggest the server will be down for approximately the next 12 hours.

We will keep this page updated with information.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

----------------------------------------------
Update 23:49

We've just spoken to the engineers who've informed me that the data transfer is still happening and due to the nature of the process it does not give us a definite time of when it will complete. We will continue monitoring and working on the server, and updating the status page throughout tonight and early morning.

-------------------------------------------
Update 9th November 07:26am

The data transfer is still taking place, we will update with further information as soon as we have it.

-------------------------------------------

09.20am

The data restore is still continuing, unfortunately we are unable to supply a precise time for completion, but we anticipate that it will be a couple more hours.

The restore is from a back up taken on the 4th November.

-------------------------------------------
12.30

The system administrators have advised that they ran into a problem with the transfer, as such all transfers had to stop for a short while. The transfer is back underway and is running faster than previously.

Hopefully once it has been running for a while longer we will be able to formulate an estimate for completion.

Thank you for your continued patience.

Update

Post by Nick »

17.05

The transfer rate for the restoration continues to fluctuate. The lastest estimate we have been given is for completion at 9pm this evening however this is subject to change.

We will continue to post updates as we gain information.

Thank you for your continued patience.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have no continued patience . . . am going to be looking at other hosting solutions if I don't get some rapid grovelling . . .

I assume they are restoring from tape.....

Amazing that they dont have discs with Raid on at the very least, or better still a disc based backup environment.....

This is more like the performance from one of the cheap and cheerful hosting providers....... not what you would expect of Pipex.....

Raid etc

Post by Nick »

Pipex have a new VPS solution which includes a striped RAID array and disc-based backup AFAIK . . . am going to look into this. Problem with any dedicated or VPS solution is that, while the uptime may be much better, if the server does go down then all my sites and my clients' sites are down. A shared hosting platform spreads the risk somewhat.

Pipex are apparently one of only two ISPs in credit in the UK at the moment (can't remember what the other one is) - I am beginning to think that this is because they buy all their hardware 2nd hand via Ebay!!

Luckily I took a database backup from SailRoom only a few hours before the server went down, as they are apparently restoring a backup from the 4th!!

Poor performance? p*** poor performance!!

Good morning Neil

One of the advantages of using a shared hosting platform with a major company like Pipex is that if one server goes down only a few clients are usually affected - our clients are spread over a large number of servers.

However . . . reliability has plummeted recently, largely I suspect due to lack of investment - Pipex is run by bean counters, and one of their proud boasts is that they are the only UK ISP currently in the black. I can't see that situation being maintained much longer as service like this means they will start to haemmorhage customers.

Our hosting policy is now under review with a view to moving towards a VSP or dedicated server environment. Whether or not we remain with Pipex in any shape or form depends on their response when I speak to their Customer Services tomorrow, but as we already have 11 months credit with them we will be able to transfer clients slowly and seamlessly to whatever new hosting platform(s) we decide to invest in.

Unfortunately, if you trawl the web you will be lucky to find any major hosting company with 100% satisfied clients - tales of doom and disaster abound. It is too competitive, with price being the overwhelming consideration for far too many businesses. Web hosting is like so many other services - you can choose a maximum of two out of the three from the following list:

- Fast
- Reliable
- Cheap

The laws of economics say you cannot have all three, no matter what the advertisements say.

Umhh challenging isn't it....

Not sure that Pipex know if they are the only ISP in the black... plenty of ISP's that are part of larger orgs that seem to doing quite well...
