WEEKEND WEATHER FORECAST
Issued: 1000 Thursday 28th February 2008

FRIDAY:
Low pressure to the northwest of Scotland today, with fronts sweeping eastwards. It will be a windy day through all areas, with severe gales affecting many northern parts.
A fair start to the day over eastern parts of England with a few bright spells. Cloud thickening quickly from the west, with rain affecting most of Scotland, western England, Wales and Ireland right from early morning. The rain becomes heavy in the afternoon, especially over western facing coasts and hills. Very windy here as well.
The heavier rain arrives in central and southern England in the late afternoon or early evening, when at the same time it clears from Scotland.
However, the clearing rain in the north is followed by heavy showers, with a risk of hail and thunder.
Winds will be SW 15-20kt (F5-F6) ahead of the fronts, becoming SW 25-35kt (F6-F8) from the west, then turning W-NW 25-35kt (F6-F8) behind the cold front over Scotland as it clears south in the afternoon. However winds could gust in excess of 50kt (F10) over the north in the afternoon.

SATURDAY:
The UK is between fronts on Saturday. This not lasting long though as the warm front to the west is going to be moving quickly eastwards through the afternoon, probably through Ireland and into southwest England by the evening.
There will be some showers for the north and northeast of Scotland. Some showers could affect western Scotland in the morning too, although tending to fade in the afternoon.
An occasional shower over northern England, again these tending to fade. Elsewhere it should be dry with good sunny spells. Cloud is going to be increasing from the west in the afternoon, making the sunshine hazy.
Cloud and periods of rain crossing Ireland, this reaching southwest England by the evening.
Winds will be mainly W 15-25kt (F5-F6) over the southern half of the country, although the winds backing and easing ahead of the warm front. More WNW 20-30kt (F6-F7) over northern England and Scotland, perhaps to 35kt (f8) in northeast Scotland at first, but these slowly easing.

SUNDAY:
Lower confidence I the forecast for Sunday, and some subtle differences between the UKMO and GFS forecasting models. Both agree with low pressure being west of Scotland, with a moist west to southwest flow through most areas.
I think that what is likely to happen is that it will be generally cloudy for many places. There will be outbreaks of rain, most across western coasts and hills, and generally light. There could be some more persistent rain for a time over southern England.
The afternoon probably becomes brighter, although the extent of this is unsure.
Winds will be mainly from the SW at 15-20kt (F5) mainly SW 10-15kt (F3-F4) over parts of Scotland.

.
Thanks again Simon, as usual I have put this at the top of the forum as an announcement in the hope that people will get used to the latest forecast always being here.

Still thinking of having a weather-specific forum - if you would like to be pestered by idiot queries from yachtsmen . . . I could make you the moderator, then you could sticky your own posts each week.

What do you think? I promise Captain Slarty won't be posting on it . . .

I see there is a slight glitch with the forum software, Simon. When you place the Beaufort force in brackets the software interprets 8} as the "cool" emoticon. Like so 8)

PS - Thanks for the forecast even although it's rubbish for the west coast and I'm wondering whether it's worth the price of the petrol to go to the boat. :(

Thanks for the forecast Simon, but with F8's forecast for Northeast Scotland on Saturday, looks like I'll be working down below decks again :)

At least I can have the heating on full blast, and stop for a brew every 20mins. (It takes 20 mins for the kettle to boil, make the brew and drink it - just in time for the next one :D )

Cheers
Jim

Yup, I am up for it.

As you no Nick I am mega-busy just now with Weatherweb.TV, PhD etc...

I can't promise to reply to everyone, but I will try my best.

Is that okay with everyone?

Just a quick thank you for tbe charts. I'm just starting out on graduating from galley slave to first mate and these charts are excellent when applied as a training aid with the symbols.
