YOTBLOG - Making a copy of your site

Hi everyone,

I have been asked by a couple of people how they can back up their YotBlog site so they have a local copy on their PC, or so they can put it on a memory stick or CD to send to friends etc.

After some thought and messing about with various offline browsers I downloaded the latest version of the HTTrack website copier from http://www.httrack.com/page/2/en/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

(Works with WinXP and Vista)

This is free open source software, and the latest version seems to work very well – well enough for me to commend it to you all as a way of backing up your own site. I have just backed up the biggest blog on the site in about ten minutes over my broadband connection. The finished download was 12MB and included all external image files.

Tell HTTrack to start from http://www.yotblog.com/myblog" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (NOT http://www.yotblog.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - you will get the whole site with everyone's blog if you do this!!) and away you go. Once downloaded the site can be browsed exactly as if you were online – just double-click the index.html file to start.

Post questions and experiences using the copier here - our resident IT experts will try and assist with any problems.

Well I'm sure I'm doing something daft, but I can't get it to work. I've tried both options (first offered and mirror versions) under the first choice (for XP etc.), but both return error messages along the lines of "mirror error".

Are you saying you can't download the file? If so something in your setttings must be blocking it.

Works for me. Used the first version.

Took me 3 goes to get just my blog. Despite Nicks advice, I was trying to save the whole site. It's been a long time since I worked on my blog, so I've probably forgotten the correct procedure.

System that worked for me was to log on to my blog and then copy/paste that address when prompted in HTTrack.

Tried it on my own site but only got the first page. I use web forwarding so will try again using the actual address where my site is hosted on NTL.

Edit: Now managed to save my own site as well - I right clicked on my site - asked for properties - and copy/paste that address. The only thing that isn't there is the little 'ticker tape' animation - can't remember the correct term - it's been a while since I did it - and it's always a relearning curve for me.

Link won't work directly - usual log in requirement - but I'm sure that you'll remember it.

No, I could download the various versions, but got errors when I tried to run them. I've now downloaded from your link above and this time it worked! A bit too well, though: as others have said I appear to have copied the entire site - it only took 4 1/2 hours!

However, since I seem to have room for it I think I'll quit at this point while I'm (sort of) ahead...

For the benefit of those who come after . . .

Don't do what Dave did. Start from the home page of your blog, not from the home page of Yotblog . . .

For example, when I was testing it I did it with Magna Carter's blog. The URL looked like this:



See how the red arrow is pointing to the URL? If this was our Fairwinds2005 blog then it would read http://www.yotblog.com/Fairwinds2005

I can't remember what the differences were in the URLs.

I found that if I went to my blog as a 'reader' then the resultant URL meant that the program saved my blog first, but then followed the links back to the home page, and hence into the other blogs.

If I went to my blog as the 'blogger', ie I could edit it, then the URL meant that only my blog was saved.
