RYA Survey, Your Voice Matters: Reflection’s On Water Survey Now Open

Post by BlowingOldBoots »

The RYA have published a survey to get opinion on a wide range of participation in water based activities. It focuses on the type of activity you do. If it’s only cruising, you get asked about that, if it’s cruising, jet skis and SUP you get asked about them.

The objective is to understand reasons or barriers to participation in order to help the RYA with their future direction.

I completed it and wonder how it will help. I trust the categories I didn't tick were of more help than mine.

Like Marisca, I wonder what use can be made of the information that I provided.
One section had me puzzled. Why have different sections for keelboat and yacht cruising. And in which category does cruising in a Westerly Seahawk lie?

I assumed that "keelboat" referred to things like Pipers and Etchells while "yacht" is something with a downstairs.

An interesting load of twaddle. I have no idea what they are trying to achieve with this questionnaire.

Surveys can be very clever at extracting useful insights if constructed by an expert, while the direction or themes may not be obvious to the participant. I have no idea if this one is good or bad.

I am always wary of "Survey Monkey" surveys as every amateur on the planet uses it as part of their "thesis" or primary school project, it is very much a DIY tool. Having worked for a global company, that was utterly paranoid about everything, they used professional Survey Researchers to create, issue, manage and collate survey data. They also provided analyse and feedback to the board and staff where relevant and compare insights with other data sets they had access to. This survey is somewhat similar, but significantly less slick and more cumbersome.

It will be interesting to read about the results. Glad you all took part, because at least they are reaching out to the participants.

shame they didn't include a more general section for freeform/verbatim input.
