Ordering white sails online

Post by Nick »

.
e-sails is the online-only arm of Kemp Sails. It is a great way of buying top quality UK made sails and sail accessories at the best prices.

Originally I designed the site to sell their cruising chutes, storm jibs and associated accessories, but recently I added a unique custom ordering system for mains, in-mast mains and genoas.

The system uses complex mathematical formulae to work out the base cost of the sail according to the size, and then lets you customise everything else. You can calculate the price with the size and options you have chosen so you know exactly how much the sail will cost. Kemp reckon this will give you exactly the sail you want but will save you around 20% compared to a more conventional ordering process.

Thankyou kind sir.

The system for formula-based ordering can be applied to lots of variable products. I am waiting for people to beat a path to my door.

A checklist of the dimensions and details required would make my task easier rather than rummaging around while on site. It threw me out when I was selecting slide size.

There is no timeout on filling in the form, so it cannot have 'thrown you out'. I don't make aggressive or stroppy order forms. I expect you mean your internet connection dropped.

I imagine most people look through the order form then go and get the measurements then come back and fill it in. If you get to item no.1, 'luff length', then have to go to your boat to measure it, or to your filing syustem to find it, then there is a good chance this will happen. And if you then come back and realise you will need the foot length and so go back again then that chance obviously increases.

I could make it idiot-proof by reminding people at the top of the form that they will need the details required by the form to be able to fill it in, but I am trying to avoid unnecessary verbosity and I am waiting on more feedback from Kemp before I make any further changes.

Switching to less ascerbic tone, thanks very much for taking a look and providing feedback. It is welcome, I am just a grumpy old sh1te these days.

I didn't find that it threw me out, but I did find that if you leave the page, you have to start from scratch, anything you input or saved is lost. a "Save inputs" or register to save them will not only make it easier fro the used, but can help Kemp identify who is using the site, for them to send follow up emails etc (assuming the user "accepts cookies")
I'd ask Kemp for better photos and explanations on the measurement pages i.e. use a new, clean sail, better lighting and mark up the photos to show exactly where the measurements are taken from.
making idiot proof is difficult, but worth the effort for Kemp, to reduce errors and disappointed customers

Nick

Just had a look at this site to get a feel for the price of a genoa.

Unfortunately I don't want a replacement for an existing sail, so it's of little benefit, unless ofcourse, I'm missing something.

I am not sure what you mean.

What requirement of yours does the site not meet?

Perhaps the site lacks the requirement to not really want to buy a replacement Genny?

You would need to work out the measurements for a 130% genoa - shouldn't be too difficult.

The spec is in the product description, but you are right, the material is not specified. Kemp did tell me, but I have forgotten.

Choice of sailcloth is not an option on this product at the moment. I will pass your comment on, and will add the sailcloth spec to the product description.

You can still get a quote from Kemp via their main website https://www.kempsails.com/ but the process will be slower and more expensive. The E-sails concept is to make high quality Kemp sails more accessible and affordable.
