Steel Boat Hull

Hi all,

I am currently working on refurbishing my 35ft steel yacht.

My attention is now on the Steel Hull which has some circular patches of rust where the anti fouling has worn off.

What do people think is the best way to tackle this problem? Is a surface removal of the rust and anti fouling enough or will I need to remove the section and re weld.

It’s something a bit out of my comfort zone so any help and advice would be much appreciated.

I guess it depends on how thick the hull is vs how bad the corrosion is...if there is any deep pitting then You’ll probably need to get the welder out. Offshore they shot blast the steel inside a habitat then immediately coat with primer - I think shot blasting is the only way to get any pitting back to good steel.The habitat is to ensure a gas free environment primarily but also to have a dry temperature controlled atmosphere for the painting.

BTW , I have never owned a steel boat- just been involved in the offshore painting.

Very helpful. Looking at sandblasting as we speak. Going to need to get a few quotes I think!

I found that newspaper and plastic padding was a good solution to make a car saleable back in the day.
