Reasonable shelter, clockwise, from southwest to north.

Should unlisted and unspoilt anchorages in the west of Scotland be kept a secret? Well, they're not really a secret, because they're all charted for a start, and anyone looking to drop the anchor just needs to check the chart. There are excellent spots listed in the supplement at the back of the CCC Sailing Directions as “occasionalâ€

Nice Anchorages

What a nice place! Must add that to the (lengthy) "must go there one day" list.

I didn't know about Penguin Bolt Holes - very interesting, and now carefully filed. The Geograph cross references are a good idea. A couple of the pictures are mine, taken on last year's summer jaunt - is this fame? :o

I've always wondered who Frank Lockwood (he of the island) was. I found two Google references: Sir F L, 1846-1897, lawyer & politician; and F Taylor L, Birmingham artist. No mention of the island, though. Anyone know?

I think he was probably this Frank Lockwood although the only link I can find to the island is that he was apparently brother-in-law to the 21st Maclean of Duart.

Frank Lockwood

There is a reference to Frank Lockwood in the Hamish Haswell-Smith book (currently on the boat). From memory, he was the Attorney General in the 1890s or thereabouts, and, as Silkie said, a brother-in-law of the Maclean of Duart.
