I had to grind down the lugs of a new external circlip to make it fit. Only obvious after reassembly.

Just to wrap this up, at last- my new circlips, bearing, and seals all came from eBay, and with only a moderate amount of swearing I managed to get everything together.
For reference, circlips are measured by the bore or shaft diameter, not the groove that they sit in. I've gone for stainless ones and a sealed bearing, and packed the whole thing with waterproof grease for good measure.
