The last couple of times I've gone aboard (after a week or a fortnight) my VHF has been slightly reluctant. I switch on and it lights up (either with the usual CH16 display or with all the lcd segments lit) and then goes blank after a few moments. After repeating this procedure a few times it seems to work normally.

What do you think is happening? Should I start saving for a new one?

I can think of two possibilities. The first (and IMHO the most likely) is poor switch contacts: either dirty or a weakened spring. I currently have similar symptoms with a cabin light which requires the switch to be "exercised" about 10 times, following which it works fine - till the next time. The second suggestion is moisture in the works upsetting the electronics, but it seems to cure itself too quickly for that to be a likely contender.

On a (slightly) related topic, I've ordered a SWR meter - you may have seen mention of this in the other place. Once it arrives it will be available for testing transmitter function.

I thought that a table of hire fees expressed in pints (or possibly drams) could be constructed...

Seems perfectly reasonable to me although you'll obviously want your first couple of "customers" to be FOC to help you iron out any bugs in the rental system.

for info I also have a swr meter and a scope if for tdr if needed
