I'm getting old and slow, so it took me 10 years to figure out that if you leave the seat and cover of a Lavac sealed down for any length of time, it pongs!
Hook the cover up and it stays as fresh as you left it weeks ago, especially if you leave fresh water with a little skoosh of something nice in the bowl.
Why does the nice label that tells you how many pump strokes are required not mention this as well I wonder.

We have that rule (though a Jabsco).
At sea, put the lid down so that it doesn't smash the bowl on falling down.
In port or at anchor, leave it up to keep air circulating.
