Farewell MRC Barcaldine?

There's a rumour that storage ashore at MRC will finish this year, or next if you have already booked a 2 year deal. It seems it's been bought for a salmon hatchery.

The future of the moorings is unclear in the rumours I have heard.

Hmmm. Hope you keep the forum posted. We've used MRC a few times, but thinking of going back to Ardrossan again for the next liftout. End of season of course, so getting there can be a bit weather dependent.....

It would be a shame if the MRC moorings go as it's taken 3 or 4 years to get the occupancy rate up to capacity. In that time Loch Creran has become something of a yachting centre and there's quite a buzz about the place with boats in and out all the time. Strange really as neither sets of moorings are ideal and are exposed to quite a fetch, but it would be sad to see them go. When we arrived there some 5 or 6 years ago there were only the (now) Creran Marine morrings and they were mostly for small boats but there are some impressive craft resident in the loch now. It can be a busy place even now with coasters loading timber and the fish farm vessels taking on live fish and I guess it risks becoming even more industrialised with this new development.

An Ayr-based firm's plan to open a £20m seaweed processing plant on South Uist has been scrapped.
Marine Biopolymers Ltd had proposed building the factory in Lochboisdale where seaweed was to be processed for use in food products and cosmetics.
The project could have created up to 60 jobs.
However, the company has now shifted its attention to setting up the factory at an existing, but closed down plant, at Barcaldine near Oban.
Storas Uibhist, which runs the community-owned South Uist Estate, had been in talks with Marine Biopolymers.
South Uist councillor Ronnie MacKinnon said it was hoped that another seaweed processing business could be attracted to the island.

Let me introduce myself: I am a french sailor from britanny; but sailing and wintering in Scotland.

And I have booked in Barcaldine for next winter...

I heard the same rumors about barcaldine and don't know what to do. The manager promised me they would keep their yachting activities: but can I trust him?
And it is not easy to know what's going on when you are far away from Scotland.

Please let me know if you have up to date news.

It's been confirmed that the MRC are not accepting storage bookings for the coming winter. I don't know whether those such as bigben who have pre-paid will be accomodated somehow, on what is likely to resemble a bomb site, or will just be refunded.

I've no news on the moorings other than to report that neighbouring Creran Marine don't want to take them over and that Linnhe Marine have made enquiries.

That's confusing. My information is that it's to become a fish hatchery. It was a seaweed processing place before it closed around 20 years ago.

Not that it makes any difference to the future of boat storage there.

I did hear from people at Creran Marine next door that they would honour any bookings already in place for the coming winter.

That's interesting. Is it separate from Linnhe Marine which seems to comp!etely occupy Dallens Bay?

Can store up to 150-200 boats. Two 40 ton capacity cranes arriving this month. This year tide dependant.
Wheeled handler coming which will allow launching at most states of the tide.

I made a pre-booking in february at Barcaldine for the next winter (fortunately without paying).
As I will go back to France for the winter, I absolutely need a place to winter the boat ashore.
And Barcaldine never informed me they will close: not very fair...

In fact, I have been lucky to find storage available in Arisaig.

See his website on the link above where there are GPS coordinates and a Google map pointer. It's at the head of Dallens Bay i.e. to the south of Linnhe Marine. From memory there are currently a few old wrecks and lorry trailers there I think. Should be a good facility once the travelhoist arrives I would think.
