Campbeltown

Very impressed with the new pontoons and shower/toilets. Very reasonable rates. Must be popular, despite the extra pontoon spaces I had to raft up.

Yup. We were there in May, hoping to get to the Northwest 200 around Coleraine, but got no further than C'town due to excessive wrinkles on the sea. I got the impression the whole place was on the up compared to memories past, but still not a great choice of noshing places. The pontoon was pretty full when we were there as well, probably due to the weather...

I'm really pleased that Campbeltown pontoons are doing well - I've enjoyed stops there before now and the Hotel where you pay is too tempting to tarry. We found a great little Chinese restaurant quite by accident and I hope tourist information is getting upgraded. I do know there are Tesco and Co-op supermarkets to hand.

Pay at the honesty box now in the new toilets and shower block just down the quay a bit from the tourist office. Put it in an envelope and fill in all your details on the outside.

I presume the toilet and showers are close to the swimming pool?

Honestly - I'm not part of the Campbeltown Tourist Board.

No, they are on the fishing boat quay, beside the RNLI shop, and near where the lifeboat is berthed - about 50 yards or so from the top of the bridge to the pontoons.

Toilets and showers location sounds much better. Previously a walk to the showers at the pool, but quite restrictive hours. And toilets down that tiny laneway beside the Hotel, to find the toilets strewn with litter and worse.
Its a really convenient location, and with the increasing use of the longer but quicker MoK route rather than the expensive, slow Crinan Canal route, then this is a good stopping off point.

I've found the Chinese takeaway/restaurant that's along Longrow quite good. Is it still there?

Spoke to Clyde Wanderer who was there on wed night this week and they were also having to raft up. I think there might be a lot of boats that were on moorings now using the pontoons for permanent berthing or as said maybe just more people stopping off here rather than using the canal.

Was there last night, Port Ellen tonight, there was some rafting going on but max 2 deep, maybe half a dozen doubled up.

I like it. Lots of help on hand, maybe local berth holders in some cases but welcoming none the less.

On a walk to Tesco I had the thought, "it's a long way to come to drop the kids off at the pool at the leisure center", much better next to the Lifeboat.

Edit: forgot to say, I counted 11 boats in Sanda channel at one point, our gang of 7 and one other heading west, the rest coming the other way. A couple of others appeared later on. One of our group works for the canal, I wonder if he was comparing traffic volumes?

At least you are now in Port Ellen in the inclement weather - Campbeltown can now be added to the places that will allow you to tie up and let a front pass over

I've always liked Campbeltown and its strange wee pubs and slightly down-at-heel atmosphere. Just a shame about the name though......
