Oh well forget about pontoons in Oban - again !!

Post by Nick »

.
Article in today's Oban Times says cost must not exceed 2.1 million, to cover:

a) Demolition of White Building on N. Pier
b) Rebuilding of same (with 'no public space' ?!?)
c) 'Fit pontoons and a sea wall'

No chance. 'Consultancy' will no doubt eat up half of that. Pathetic.

I know Oban doesn't owe any particular section of the leisure industry anything, but watching last year as busload after busload of passengers were offloaded from the Queen Mary onto the scabby, and slippery Oban times slipway to immediately be driven away from the town I do wonder what the the council wants. The amount of tourist spend that Oban actively discourages would make a great business project for some student.

We shouldn't take it personally. Some years ago a student of mine (originally from Oban) wrote an honours dissertation which was essentially a scathing critique of local policy on supporting young people outside school (youth work, sports etc.). Argyll and Bute council seem to be obsessed with not doing stuff.
