Thanks Geoff, but actually when I dug out the Avon bracket I realised it's held together by the paint, so is beyond help without welding. A job for another time, then.

I have a similar one. It is irretrievably fecked.

If you come across a cheap source of new brackets let me know.

Cheapest I can find is £100, which is what I paid for the dinghy 12 years ago !

A good collection there now, and I saw what might have been Santa dropping off another anchor this evening.
When the Elgin stuff arrives, We'll make a start on processing. Paint removal first, then stripping old galv off, then galvanizing.
Will advise progress.

Hi Geoff,

I have 60m of 10mm chain, galvanised with some orange paint towards the bitter end and rust. I would like to drop it off at Cumbernauld if not too late. I depart for work on the 28th and wont be back until the 30 January again, so can only collect after that date.

Can I drop the chain at Cumbernauld?

One question, I don't think my chain is high tensile but if it was would the galvanising reduce the strength of the chain?

I will be coming up from Kip so if there are any in Kip who need a collection and drop off at the galvanisers, let me know, assuming I have not run out of time.

No problem to drop in another chain to add to the collection.
When they're all here I'll post a list of what we've got to be sure nothing gone astray. There's still one or two en-route from Elgin. (They way to take cost out of galvanizing is to do as much as possible and put no time constraints on it. Its an unpredictable business, so having work to do "at our leisure" is a bonus, most want it yesterday, and they pay for that difficult scheduling job.)

Re High tensile chain.
There are various grades of chain, the most common for anchors are G30, G40, BBB and G43. G43 is stamped on the links, not often every one, but every 2-300mm or so. BBB is sometimes stamped on every link depending on supplier. All these suffer no effect from galvanizing.

Rarely, some use G70. This is heat treated G43, and it looses some of the advantage of the heat treatment, about 10% of its strength.

There are higher grades, G80, G100, G120. G80 and G100 are stamped with numbers (8, 80 or similar) to show that. These should not be galvanized. Its most unlikely that an anchor chair is of this material unless it was secondhand from a trucker (unlikely long enough) or a chain hoist or similar.

In the case of G70, its the heat treatment that is affected, by the galvanizing being at 450C.
In the case of the high grades its a different mechanism, the pretreatment (cleaning) of the steel is done in dilute acid (HCl), and extended time in acid can cause hydrogen embrittlement in those higher grades of steel. These grades don't just loose a little strength, they can catastrophically loose a lot. They don't come galvanized.

If your anchor chain is galvanized, then it can be re-galvanized.

I recently did some research on re-galvanizing road crash barrier, and extensive tensile testing of it afterward shows that it actually gets a little stronger, but by such a small amount, that its not significant.

There may be a flaw in that plan......I had a phone call from the Elgin plant yesterday, to say my chain was ready for collection, having been galvanised... !

Can I ask what might be a stupid question? I saw you mentioned about removing shackles if you want to get them undone again, How does regalvanising get done and not stick all the links together?
