I don't know for sure (perhaps Donald will) but two years ago they had all the kit on the pontoons. Surely thats long enough to finish the job - even in Ireland?

you would think so but what i remembered was you mentioning a big spool of cable sitting at the end of the pontoon. all the sites i`ve looked at seem to imply that the only way to get to rathlin is with calmac so pontoons don`t get a mention. neither ( surprisingly ) does rathlin appear in the marinas and moorings of this site.

Think it was Donald who mentioned it but

it could just as easily have been a bit left over since the light/power units were already bolted down.

well i`ll keep ferreting. just trying to ascertain whether we would be able to leave rathlin with fully charged batteries for a mooring at gigha or with depleted batteries for the pontoon at pt ellen.

only inasmuch that the charging system on the honda o/b is pretty limited and i don`t like being under power for long periods.

'Fraid I cannot help you, I've never used the pontoons (I still prefer the inner harbour).

i`m sure you would have said if there was but i`m assuming there is no electricity points on the old pier.

Sorry, there was no leccy at the harbour. Cannot say about the pontoon, although seem to recall a drum of unconnected cable lying near the pontoon, but that was, blimey, last year, or the year before(?). Best to assume not.

i can now answer my own question. there is indeed elecricity on the rathlin pontoon. 4 junction boxes with 2 power take offs each.
each box also incorporates a water tap. there are no hoses but this is not a problem since none of the taps actually deliver any water. the only water swupply is a stand pipe at the head of the ferry ramp.
fees - £12.50 per night ( leccy included ).
wonderful place - well worth a visit.

to tell the truth i was a bit disappointed by mccuaigs. the tea room part was much busier than the bar. the first night we were there was alright - a few locals and a bit of craic going.
after that the bar acquired the statutary polish barman, the crew of a visiting gunboat and the locals all but disappeared.
on the saturday night there were just 12 customers on the public side of the bar ( incl us 2 and the owner ) and i think only 2 of the others were locals.
from your previous posts i was expecting at the very least a fiddle, a tin whistle and a few rousing verses of the irish rover so perhaps my expectations were unjustly high :)
