removing numbers from sails

Post by mm5aho »

I recently bought a second hand spinnaker (stronger, smaller for use in higher winds).
I came with a boat number different to mine, so I want to remove the numbers.
They appear to be a cloth of sorts, and stuck on with something very sticky. I can peel the number off with some effort, but it leaves a sticky residue.

Any bright ideas on how to remove either the numbers easier, or to remove the residual glue without damaging the sailcloth?

Geoff, I used toluene to remove the glue when I "borrowed" a Sigma 33 chute a few years back. Didn't appear to attack the nylon. Careful if buying on-line - a purchase of nitrogen fertiliser at the same time might get a visit from the men in black!

Meths is sometimes reasonably good on sticky stuff.

If toluene is good try petrol, just as flammable but you can't put a fire out with water like you can with meths.

Update:
Numbers successfully removed. Peeled them off and then cleaned up with standard white spirit, then a wash in soapy water.
Tried citrus "sticky stuff removed", not so successful. Meths was also disappointing.
