I got a slack handful of these daytime running lights http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-Super-Bright ... 1161780706
and fitted them instead of the greedy and rather dim original festoon bulbs.
They fit just right and with the diffuser fitted the harshness is reduced a bit. With two of these on, the saloon is daylight bright for working in, and we still have a couple of tungstens for 'mood lighting'
Lots of light and no discernible movement on the ammeter!

They look good. I tried the link but they do ship to UK! Will delve a bit further.
I This winter I have replaced all my nav lights with LED lamps bought from here: http://www.boatlamps.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d104.html. Changed the Tri and anchor, front bi and stern. They look good when on. Hopefully they will last a while and save on battery power!
HEADS UP - I just had a try in the shed with one of these powered by a 13.8v power supply. it got VERY hot and quickly melted the adhesive pads attaching it to a shelf.
If you've already got them fitted (like me!) I strongly recommend a check before any damage occurs.
MY guess is they should really have a pulsed supply to minimise temperature, or at least a current-limiting resistor, bearing in mind the voltage will rise to 14.4 while the batteries are charging.
Perhaps they rely on being stuck to the front of a speeding car for cooling...
