I was wondering if everyone has to go through this "MOT" process. Is it only certain insurers who require it - or do they all, but take into consideration type of boat and useage, disregarding fair-weather non-racing sailors in brick outhouses?

I've just had to have an insurance survey. I thoroughly recommend Colin Brown:

Very pragmatic and clear. I have probably saved the cost of the survey in the helpful things he picked up (a loose skin fitting being one of them). I'm working through his list of recommendations and have already implemented all the critical ones in advance of re-launch.

He's based in Helensburgh.

GJW insist on one every 7 years. I need one next winter but I'm wondering if I could move to another insurer without the need for one. I though when I bought the boat 6 years ago 7 years was a long time, oh how time flies.

My insurance company has never asked me for a survey - I can only assume that it is because my boat is of much lower value than your luxury yachts.

Been with Pantaenius since buying the boat in 1997. They asked for a survey at the time of purchase but never since. I have written to them advising of the significant improvements made from time to time, which includes re-rigging 3 years ago.
