After The Snow

Sophie D. Crocket

Listed for the CILIP Carnegie Medal, 2013

Heavy snow and long, arctic like winters have arrived in the UK and society can't cope. People are living in townships, energy and food is scarce, government control is hanging by a thread. A young lad is left marooned in the valleys (set in Wales) after his family goes missing. The story of his survival and the meaning of his fathers wisdom starts to unfold; more about optimism in the face of adversity than dystopia. The dialect of the lad, who has been raised without formal schooling is excellent and only requires a few pages to get used too. Minor comments on the current energy policies and head in sand attitude are interesting.

The author has worked in the Eastern European timber industry and witnessed long, hard winters for most of her working life, in addition to living through the collapse of the USSR, hence her story is formed on the experience of such conditions. She was also raised on a yacht as her parents sailed around the world.
