It has never crossed my mind to anchor at Hyskeir, quite the opposite actually as I have thought of it as being a bit threatening what with the banks and all. Got caught in some big seas between there and Canna in a sw gale once so the idea of actually going there sends a few shivvers - gut feeling is to keep as far away as possible ! Love to try it on a calm night though
These lighthouses have been an attraction to me, and its been fun exploring them.
Hyskeir on a calm day affords several anchorages, and exploring ashore is interesting.
We anchored off the light to the north east. There is a narrow cutting between rocks closer, but the wave height, though low suggested to not anchor there.
What amazed us that day (we arrived about 10 and left at about 3pm) was the number of basking sharks. We treid a count of them, with two of us covering 180 degrees each. Not easy and not accurate, but we estimated >150. Some can be seen in most of these images.
The light is substantial, and good keepers house too, along with generator room, oil tanks etc.
There's a helipad. I guess the NLB people visit by helicopter more often than any other way now?
Was sad to see how much trash is washed up there though...
I understand that when manned, this lighthouse was the only one to make the claim of having a one hole golf course!
