Hurley question
Hello, a question for any Hurley lovers/owners out there. Can anyone give me a heads up as to the purpose of the small strip of wood on the coachroof just behind the mast. Mine has given up the ghost and in the short term has been put back in place with a piece of gaffa tape. Is it for access and if so, when replaced should it be removeable?
Thanks
Zander

Re: Hurley question
Hi Zander,
Have you got a pic?
I can't think of anything like that on Silkie but I have a hatch garage which covers a lot of the area behind the mast. You ask if it's for access so presumably there is a hole under it - what can you see inside said hole? What vintage is your boat?

Re: Hurley question
Hi Silkie,
Wee Venti is a SCM build and possibly of 79- 82 vintage ( the model with one side window). There is no gap underneath this piece of wood, however when removed it reveals a 12" long slot about 1/2" wide which appears to give access to the underside of the coach roof. I don't have a photo, but I will take one this weekend. It may only be a decorative feature, but I'm just checking in case I should be worried about water ingress.
Thanks for the prompt reply.

Re: Hurley question
I don't really know anything much about the SCM boat but presume they only made cosmetic alterations to differentiate the design visually without spending too much.
If it's anything like the Hurley Marine construction, water ingress over time softens the sheet of ply between the coachroof and the cabin lining (intended to spread compressive forces from the mast) and leads to problems maintaining rig tension so you're right to be concerned about keeping water where it belongs.
Take lots of pics.

Hi Silkie,
Took some pics although it was persisting with rain so I did not take the timber off to get to the underside. Hope they are clear enough.

Re: Hurley question
You can't put pix on this site. You have to put them on a site like Photobucket or Picasa and then link to them from here.

Re: Hurley question
Apologies to all who replied to my post for not getting the pictures uploaded, have been struggling with the process (not a digital native) however now the boats out of the water I'll sort the initial problem and pass on anything I learn from it.

POSTING PICTURES
How can I include a picture in my post?
Your image needs to be hosted on the web on a site which allows linking. The url of the image should then be wrapped in img tags within the body of the post thus: [img]yourpicurl[/img]
Most go for a free Photobucket account. If you choose PB you upload your pics by clicking Choose files after selecting your desired image size from the Reduce to drop-down box. This isn't right now either but you've nearly all figured it out for yourselves as far as I can see.) 640x480 does not stretch the forum but will not display your treasured image to best effect, see ADVANCED PICTURE POSTING to follow at a later,(while not strictly inaccurate this is clearly optimistic, at best) unspecified, date.
Click on the box labelled IMG code below the thumbnail of the pic you wish to post and PB will copy the whole IMG string to your clipboard so that you only need (It no longer does this. You now need to ctrl+c after selecting the img box prior) to ctrl+v at the desired point within the body of your post to place the image. If you've got it right the image will display in Preview mode.

Re: Hurley question
Thanks for the link. Gave up on the process a while ago will try again when I've got more of a scooby. Removed the bit of ply, poked around with a screwdriver and found out it was an infill sealing the front of the housing for the sliding hatch and the coach roof. Have replaceced and sealed. All good now.
Thanks again for the response.

Re: Hurley question
Hmm.
Is this 12" by 0.5" slot an athwartships by vertical slot between the coachroof and the hatch garage moulding formed where the front edge of the hatch garage moulding lifts up from the line of the coachroof? I had assumed the 12" was fore-and-aft and the 0.5" was athwartships - for no good reason apart from "which appears to give access to the underside of the coach roof".

Re: Hurley question
Hi Silkie,
That sounds like the very bit. Its a rather odd shaped wee bit of ply with a slight curve on it to follow the shape of the front of the sliding hatch housing. I've replaced it with a nice wee piece of teak which should stop it delaminating in the future.
Cheers

Re: Hurley question
I stand ready to be corrected but AFAIK that slot is there to allow water which falls on and runs off the hatch itself to drain from under the garage. Otherwise it would just collect there surely? This is probably what resulted in the demise of the old bit of ply.
