I recently bought a wind up torch in IKEA - it fulfilled my criteria of cheap and bright. I don't know any specs for it but it seems to be a very fine piece of kit. It feels sturdy and gives a good light. I don't know how it will survive on the boat - obviously it makes no pretence of being waterproof - but I might keep it in a plastic bag.
Anyway I feel it is £3.50 well spent.

Re: IKEA
Sounds like a windup to me...
but seriously, I have a waterproof torch that has a magnet inside, and a coil. Rather than wind up, it is shaken (longitudinally), and builds up some charge and then runs for a while. Not very long, but a quick further shake brings it back.
It floats.
No idea where to get these now. This one is >10 years old.

Re: IKEA
The nice people at the RYA sent me a note offering a 15% discount on a torch - only £199.99 before discount! Just how much better can a phekkin' torch be? (Exposure Marine Pro3)
