Wind turbine/generator

Post by claymore »

Does anybody know who makes those spinning tubular gizmos - rather than the ones with blades - someone said they might be quieter than the conventional blade jobbies.

Don't think they've any more power than a dynohub... but at least they're small enough to be mounted in the spreader area where there will be less noise transmitted to the master stateroom.

Our Aerogen is almost silent and puts a useful amount of juice into the batteries.

Someone suggested that if I fitted one to my radar structure thingy, It might transmit every whirr into the master fornicatorium...

Whirring noises in the aft fornicatorium should never be from above. It's a rule. RTFMFFS

To answer the original question, I seem to remember Forgen made one. And as Sahona has pointed out, the reviews in PBO and other mags showed that it produced almost no useful power.

I used to have a Forgen on the mizzen mast of my Miller Fifer. Brilliant for topping up batteries between weekends. Maximum charge current witnessed by me was 1.2 A so pretty minimal but I thought it was excellent. However, we only had one house battery and other than a tiny chartplotter and a couple of lights nothing electric to speak of.
