When we need to clear the log impeller the mug-full of sea goes to the large bilge area below the saloon where the fridge compressor and other things live. It's a pain to wipe up, so I'm making a little catchment bilge.
The ply will be glassed over to be waterproof, but not attached to the floor supports so it can flex if required.
It will also mean the plastic and wooden plugs can be kept handily close should the unthinkable happen.

On my previous boat the log transducer was sited under a bunk giving me free space above it. I made a well by glassing in a piece of plastic road crossing duct round it, with its top above the water line. Taking the log out then became a stress free and unhurried job, and the glow of light shining up the well with the log removed was quite pretty.
