I have recently been approached by some web person who appears to establish professional relations.

Has anyone else had similar approaches and can anyoneoffer me advice or guidance?

I find LinkedIn very useful for work stuff.
There are some idiots there, but also safeguards as with facebook (which not everyone uses / activates).
Good for finding sales, finding suppliers, finding jobs, answering technical queries, etc.
The "groups" facility is especially good, where specialisms can be explored.

If you're not in it though, getting unsolicited "join in" emails is a bother.

Hmmm . . . I guess I am not putting the effort in. I have never had even a sniff of a bit of work through it, in spite of various 'connections' endorsing me for all sorts of skills.

On line corporate dating site, not to be taken too seriously

I've found linkedin to be quite good for finding colleagues who have moved on or getting background on who's who in some of our suppliers.
When I was job hunting, it was useful to get background on who you were meeting/calling. Now, I get approaches every month or so from headhunters who are using it as a database to find candidates or from companies selling financial services.
Some colleagues appear to use it as an extension of the company email address book, which is pointless. It is a good indicator of who is feeling uncertain and starting to search for a new job as you see them adding lots of recruitment consultants to their connections and dressing up their "experience".

An Indian chap whom I hired as a Logistics Supervisor turned out to be not very good so we released him. At that time I was contracted to a project where Shell was the operator. After years of being pestered by this man to become a friend on whatever the Indian sub continent was using for social media, he finally popped up last month inviting me to join Linked In, apparently he is now a "Shell ENgineer" (with the capital N). This sums LinkedIn up for me. I would never join it and I rely on my reputation and contacts for the next project.
