um, i didn't calculate those sorta things! I mean i know it's notmal to calculate the numbers for a transat, perhaps to the last minute and second... but after a while yerknow, just shop and fuel and set off, see how it goes.

the carib x-ing i went via cartagena, prolly 6/7 days, heavy weather at the end, fab place. Then a day to san blas islands (coconuts, that's it) then panama... panama is 35? miles ish so the uplocks one afternoon, then 6 am 4hrs to the three downlock,s no need to know anythiong cos pilot is delivered ti the boat. Galapagos for a tortoise pic is 900miles, then marquesas 3000 black sand mountains, then tua motus ooh vair remote away from it all, also franca is, tahiti 800nm from marquesas, society islands Mo'orea, Huahine, Bora Bora esp wrecked by recession in last few years (i went in 2005). Then ...Palmerston erm 600miles is the first place i checked in and out of properly cos they do it, then Nuie i think 800ish, same there another Tonga and fiji can't have been far, bali is fab and 3800, mauritius bit rubbish tho nice people 3400, Reunion 150 worth a flight, then 1200 to seth efrican mainland and another 800 to cape town, 5800 back to st martin

first motorng is probably through panama.... but then it might be a fair bit. I can motor 12 days but then no fuel and never did that. I spose i cd crawl thru the logbooks and work out exaccerly how much motring but meh, probaly won't.

I don't think i'd do much different. You need to know the boat and take spares and tools - i correctly guessed a raymarine gps, but i spose i mite recommends de-Raymarinin the boat. At one point on the phone to their support and sed oh look just put me through to Ray willyer ... i upgraded to a hydraulic drive instead of the linear worm drive, much better... I had that engine mount go and it was Good that i had yanmar.

The sun might never set on the British Empire but once clear of Panama you need English first ...and French in Fr Polynesia, and reunion same thing. I spose same slightly applies to some Fr Carib islands - without the lingo you are losing out. I had crew who spoke Spanish in Panama and that was v handy.

MOB-wise i checked and trained and then threw myself in 3 times. I won't be doing that in scotland btw and not cos i ain't skipper....
