New corporate website (with no adverts)

Post by Nick »

.
The actual Webcraft UK website was last revamped in 2008 and wasn't that fantastic then. I've redesigned it - though most of the content is the same. If any of you can be bothered looking through it for typos and malfunctions before I shift it to the root tomorrow afternoon that would be very helpful.

There's no adverts anywhere on the site, so ad blocking software should not be an issue . . . .

The Google Successes link goes to a 404 not found.
Too many pages have an unnecessary scroll bar down the right hand side.

Thanks Pete,

I forgot to upload the Google page. Now rectified.

The 'unnecessary' scroll bars are there so the site doesn't jump to the right between pages with scrollbars and pages without - which is more distracting. The minimum page length is set to screen height plus one pixel in the CSS.

I really should charge for this ... don't you have a spillchucker?

HOW WE WORK
TYPICAL WORKFLOW

Week 5
“Our terms are 14 dayse.”
Presumably a typo for “days”

WHERE WE WORK

“and, lets face it, we can't communicate with you successfully via the internet and the telephone then we aren't likely to create a compelling website that communicates effectively with your market either.”
Shouldn’t there be an “if” before “we can't communicate …”?
Also “lets” should be “let’s”.

Company History

“By the time the new millenium arrived ..” Should be “millennium”.
“…developedgraphically rich sites…” Should be “developed graphically-rich”.

Portfolio Page

“Wordpress” in the heading, but “WordPress” elsewhere.

Google Successes

Missing question-mark in first sentence. Suggest “Are you on the first or second page of Google? If you aren't …”

Get an Expert

Missing question-mark after “…so why tie up valuable resources and time designing and publishing your own web site only to be disappointed with the result.”

If you build it will they come?

Typos: “There is no magic bullet thouhg.” “We also emphasise the iomportance of inbound links.”

Keeping it fresh - updating the content on your web site

Typo: “… news tickers, forumsand similar…” also you need to decide – Wordpress or WordPress.

WordPress - the world's most popular CMS.

Consistency – see above Wordpress or WordPress.
Typos: “and although thelearning curve for Wordpress is not too steep it takes time to get god at creating and maintaining attractive looking content.”
(I would write "attractive-looking", but this is an arguable matter of style.)

Our Pricing Structure

Typo: “- cropping, resuizing, enhancing etc – free”

Our Environmental Policy

Plural subject, singular verb: “All computers and other equipment is switched off outside office hours, not left on overnight.” (Should be “…are switched off…”)

Those were all I could find on a quick look - not guaranteed to be exhaustive.

Thanks for this. Will sort all these first thing. Am on my new iPAd at the moment - brilliant for many things, but probably not web editing!

Pages are created using a text editor . . . as all the HTML is visible as well spell-checking is done manually - with occasonal failures! I suppose I should copy the text from the browser and paste it into Word, but an army of BlueMoment eyes is better and spots things a spellchecker wouldn't.

Thanks again to anyone who cast their critical eye over the site. (I see there have been 62 views, so a few of you must have had at least a cursory look at the site). There may be more errors lurking in the woodwork, but I think the site is reasonably fit for purpose now and slightly less like the cupboard doors in a joiner's house. It has now been moved to the root http://www.webcraft.co.uk

It looks OK to me, but strange things can happen when a site is moved from one folder to another, so if anyone is at a bit of a loose end wants to make another quick check of the links etc that would be good.

When I click on 'Our Blog' under 'About us' I get a page saying :

There doesn't seem to be a wp-config.php file. I need this before we can get started.
Need more help? We got it.
You can create a wp-config.php file through a web interface, but this doesn't work for all server setups. The safest way is to manually create the file.
Create a Configuration File

Surely I should just get to your blog?

Thanks Pete,

A classic example of what can happen when you start moving files about wholesale on the server . . . the wp-congfig file had slipped into the wrong folder. Seems to be working now. I suppose I should make a blog entry . . .
