My faith in humanity has been reinforced! Raymarine have just returned my ST2000+, presumably repaired and working perfectly - I'll find out tomorrow. It was returned to them with obvious signs of water ingress; the display had liquid water rather than condensation; and the operation was a rapid slew to full out. I suspect the problem occurred when I turned the thing off during a snow storm in the Moray Firth 'cos the waves were getting a bit big for it and it cooled down. A perfectly normal use in our climate, I would have thought.

So, well done Raymarine. Exactly a week from posting to return. Keep your receipts for your purchases and watch out for the sceptic habit of putting dates a*se about t*t.

Good news. However shouldn't that be septic as in tank?

The repaired ST2000+ lasted until June and expired totally after trying to put me onto the Arranman's Barrels during a rainstorm. I finally got round to sending it back to Raymarine when I finished WHYW and actually went home. I had bought another yin from Sean at Nancy Black's - a phone call from off Gigha and it was waiting me when I got to Oban for the Round Mull Race.

Today I received a very apologetic phonecall from Raymarine - there was apparently a flaw in the new casing they had fitted under guarantee and water had got onto the pcb and phut! The thing is on its way back again with another new casing, pcb, seal etc.

So now I have 2 of the things. My temptation is to keep both for the inevitable moment when one fails again. Why do I keep faithful to the marque? Pure laziness and an even greater disdain for the Simrad TP32 and their lack of service + it actually interfaces with my GPS, and wind instruments.

Or flog one and put the money towards a Windpilot (or similar windvane steering)...

Our ST2000+ worked reliably for 5 years after repair when we used a windvane when sailing and ST2000+ when motoring. The reason for breakage - a toddler end stopping the piston and stalling the motor - it is really not a robust design!

You aren't persuading me to buy a ST2000+.

I knew they don't like damp.

Stopping the thing moving when it's trying to seems a bad idea too.

If I try to keep it dry and let it work as it likes to is there any reason an ST2000+ is going to break prematurely?

I did like the customer service stories I have heard, they seem to mend the things without much fuss when they do break.
