Oban transit marina approved

Plans for a 60 berth-transit marina have been approved by Argyll and Bute Council.

The Planning, Protective Services and Licensing committee made the decision today, Wednesday June 26.

The application by Oban Bay Marine includes provision for small day boats/ribs, a diesel berth, manager’s office and limited use for over-wintering.

Area Leader for Oban, Lorn and The Isles Louise Glen-Lee said: “This marina will enable Oban to welcome vessels into the bay area for a walk ashore facility. This will add to the already rich tapestry of facilities there are here already for sailors and kayakers. We already have some great facilities and this transit marina adds to that.

“I look forward to seeing vessels from cruise liners to kayaks using the bay well together and strengthening Oban as an international sailing hub.

“The committee’s decision allows the applicants to go ahead and pull together a funding package and put together a strong business case together.”

There is to be a floating breakwater.

Don't see why it should be any worse than Kerrera in a strong SE wind really. Admittedly it is not unknown for waves to break onto George Street in Winter gales, but we shall see . . .

Good news. Great to see that it has finally got the go ahead.

Hope they get it right and the floating breakwater is more effective than the Rhu Marina one.

This is one case where a marina is increasing the options of where to stop/overnight without impacting any existing anchorages or moorings.

Wonder how long it will now take to complete the design, funding and construction?

Indeed. I was going to mention Rhu in response to the comment from Claymore.

Only time will tell, but the designers are surely aware of the potential for damage in a major Winter storm after watching George St being swept by waves and debris in two out of the last three winters.

Port Edgar has a floating breakwater made of umpty thousand old tyres. There's still a fair old swell in a Northerly...

The Oban approval is great news. An overnight stop with transport links and the ability to select marina based on wind direction will be, I think, a first for Scotland. Oban's USP perhaps?.

Rhu Narrows and Oban BAy are about equal on teh shelter front I would have said.

As DaveS says, if unsuitable in the prevailiong conditions there is another marina just across the bay . . .

Anyone know offhand what wind direction at Rhu eats the boats there? I'm guessing south easterly, in which case, having thought about it, yes, it is quite exposed. I've been watching at Port Bannatyne as a series of Rhu boats get huge missing chunks from their bows replaced ... I understand that other yards around the Clyde are being kept busy on more of them. Thirty all together, I hear.
