I won't know if a distress call comes in, whether or not my radio is switched on. If, however, you bang off a flare or otherwise attract my attention then you can be sure I'll do everything I humanly can to help.

That really is most reassuring, however I suspect that most people getting into difficulties in coastal waters would probably make a VHF call before they resorted to flares.
I don't find the radio to be overly intrusive nor particularly a drain on the battery, I would feel uncomfortable if I was to learn that I might have helped someone in distress if only I had had the radio switched on.

There was a "lilo" incident in Saltcoats recently - remember we've been living with Easterlies for a while.. If you were unable to hear the radio you may have missed the opportunity to save a young life. As it happens, the Gannets were out in their whirliebird and snatched the prize, but several boats were already searching.
I believe you should keep watch on CH16 and the local appropriate channel as much as possible not just for yourselves...
