They were very sociable when we met them in Tobermory on Tuesday. Did you remember to switch on your set before calling them?claymore wrote:Called Wight Dawn whilst sailing past them

Maybe they just don't switch the VHF on? I seldom do when pottering on my own.

Wouldn't matter if they did or not, I can't hear it or answer it from the helm anyway.

You and me both. It's just a battery drain when I'm driving.Arghiro wrote: Wouldn't matter if they did or not, I can't hear it or answer it from the helm anyway.

So we can't rely on either of you guys to help when you are nearest to the casualty, 'cos you won't know?

I won't know if a distress call comes in, whether or not my radio is switched on. If, however, you bang off a flare or otherwise attract my attention then you can be sure I'll do everything I humanly can to help.sahona wrote:So we can't rely on either of you guys to help when you are nearest to the casualty, 'cos you won't know?

Re: Wight Dawn
That really is most reassuring, however I suspect that most people getting into difficulties in coastal waters would probably make a VHF call before they resorted to flares.ubergeekian wrote:I won't know if a distress call comes in, whether or not my radio is switched on. I don't find the radio to be overly intrusive nor particularly a drain on the battery, I would feel uncomfortable if I was to learn that I might have helped someone in distress if only I had had the radio switched on.

Re: Wight Dawn
There was a "lilo" incident in Saltcoats recently - remember we've been living with Easterlies for a while.. If you were unable to hear the radio you may have missed the opportunity to save a young life. As it happens, the Gannets were out in their whirliebird and snatched the prize, but several boats were already searching.
I believe you should keep watch on CH16 and the local appropriate channel as much as possible not just for yourselves...
