I thought the thread was heading happily in the general direction of the first post until some eejit brought sailing techniques into it. Why can't people stick to religion and politics on a sailing forum, it's less contentious?

I always think it counter productive to sheet in the main as some people do - this in fact encourages the boat to go up to windward which is the opposite of what you are trying to do
In light conditions I generally hand the sail across, but in windier ones I sheet it well in as I start the gybe - I find it makes it easier to control when the gybe happens. Even i light conditions I sheet in enough that the boom is brought up by the sheet and not the standing rigging.
Dunno if it's right, but I haven't lost a mast yet.
