Council planning to remove Port Ellen moorings

Post by Nick »

.
The perennially yacht-hostile Argyll and Bute Council are planning to remove the visitor moorings at Port Ellen.

I wasn't aware there were any. Pontoons, yes, but I can't recall seeing any mooring cans for visitors.

Possibly the most uncomfortable moorings anywhere.

If they have been there that long, they probably need repair/renewal & I doubt many Councils will be spending money on moorings, even if they brought money in for the local traders.

I was in Port Ellen last week & I don't recall more than 3 shops including the local co-op. Even the former distillery is only a Malting house now.

I have written to both Argyll and Bute council and the Community Council to ask for a review.
I pointed out that althought the moorings are uncomfortable, they do provide an instant alternate to the pontoons if they are full.
The cost is about £2100 per year for full maintenance, which was completed last year, so they are good to go until next season.
The cost divided by the hotels and distilleries would be a couple of hundred quid each, so not a lot for a reassuring facility.
Please add your voice to the argument if you feel the same way.
