STAINLESS WELDING
STAINLESS WELDING
Any one know a reliable stainless steel fabricator in north ayrshire coast area who might repair my fuel tank.
Tank is out of the boat and in Largs. I can deliver .It has suffered local pit corrosion where it sat on a wet bearer.
Tank is 40gallon 2mm grade 316 s/s. Only a strip 450mm by 60mm is affected.
A friend said there was a good s/s fabricator in Irvine but could not remember where.
Anyone had first hand experience of stainless repairs????

I've heard that epoxy putty is extensively used in the agricultural industry to fix fuel tank leaks.

I'd take it to West Of Scotland Engineering in Glasgow.
Re: STAINLESS WELDING
Guys... I thought of epxoy putty,, but it is right under the tanks,,,although I can do it now when the tanks is out ,, I'll never see it again when the tanks back in . But I am tempted as new tanks are costly.
But I wanted to explore weld first....
The irvine adress is worth a try thanks... My friend said "it was in an industrial estate",, so that bits is right so far..
will keep you posted.
Its a lesson though,, make sure your tank in not sitting on a bearer in water.. Stainless is only stainless if oxygen can get to it..
cheers

Re: STAINLESS WELDING
I assume this means you are also having to do a job on the offending bearer?

Re: STAINLESS WELDING
I note there is a nasty review of West of Scotland in Glasgow,, so am going to try Irvine.... The guy there sounds good.
The sole of my boat although deep keeled has a silly low spot in the sole which never fully drains to the sump. You can only really see it with the tank out. The bearer, sat in that well; wet
I will fill up the well. and the geometry allows me to slightly raise the tank also. That way the area should stay dry.
Hopefully
